The Historian Assistant is the first book of a trilogy that follows the life of Eileen Richards.
Eileen (15) lives on a space station in the Off World Systems some 20 light years away from a long-dead Earth. Eileen is also a member of a criminal gang called the Rats. She has been a member since her mother died and is currently their top Tech. Her ability to hack into any system is a valuable service. Even to other gangs on other stations.
Danny (16) is a member of the Rats understanding that he stop using Bliss, a highly addictive drug. Eileen and Danny love each other. Eileen is trying to help Danny, but the gang lacks the resources. When Eileen returns from the job, Danny is missing. She finds him in an airlock, high on Bliss. Danny tells her he loves her and opens the outside door.
This drives Eileen into a rage. She can not stand the situation they are in, with no money for food or medicine. She freelanced and takes a job smuggling. It does not go well. She is arrested and put in a holding cell due to being sent to prison in three days—a death sentence. The Rats are working to get her bailed out but it will cost. Eileen realizes she is causing more harm than good.
Mr. Clark bails Eileen out. He tells Eileen that he represents her uncle and will take her to him. Clark takes her to a restaurant to meet Doctor Fitzgerald and his dog Buddy. It became clear to Eileen that Clark is trying to hire Fitzgerald to evaluate some old Earth artifacts. It also became clear that Buddy is not a pet but very intelligent. The negotiation does not go well and Fitzgerald is about to walk until Clark shows him, and only him, some documents. Fitzgerald agrees to take Clark’s offer.
Clark then introduces Eileen as his niece based on an impossible DNA report. Clark makes it clear to Fitzgerald that Eileen is under his care.
Fitzgerald, Buddy, and Eileen go back to Fitzgerald’s ship. Fitzgerald tells Eileen to wait in the conference room and walks out with Buddy. Eileen will not sit by without knowing what is going on. She hacks into the ship’s system and becomes the captain. Locating Fitzgerald and Buddy she confronts them to demand answers. Fitzgerald is as much in the dark as Eileen is. They surmise Clark has put Eileen in Fitzgerald’s care to distract him. Fitzgerald decides, with prodding from Buddy, to hire Eileen as his assistant to distract Clark.
Clark takes Eileen and Fitzgerald to an unmapped planet where he has made an amazing discovery. The first indications of an intelligent alien life-form, an ancient Earth bomber (1947), its crew, and its payload of 7 atomic bombs. Atomic/nuclear weapons are strictly prohibited. Clark’s plan for these bombs will kill millions and allow him to take over the larger stations of the Off World Systems.
Fitzgerald convinces Clark that the bombs are unstable and that the crew needs to be woken up to secure them. To defeat Clark, Eileen teams up with this ancient Earth army. Eileen will help them adapt to the modern world to prepare them for battle. She will join their gang and will learn to be a soldier.
Clark is defeated but it leaves many scars for Eileen to deal with. She becomes an assistant to Fitzgerald but wants to get the blessing of the leader of her gang. Eileen and Fitzgerald travel back to the station.
